Three auditors.

One frank conversation.

Join Adrian Webber, @mudenvironmental's Director and SA EPA Site Contamination Auditor, as he steps onto the @alga.ltd stage alongside respected peers Steve Kirsanovs and Jean-Paul Pearce for an honest look at what really goes on behind a site contamination audit.

This is not your typical technical talk.

It is a straight-shooting session from auditors who have seen it all, sharing insights from years in the field where pressure, complexity and compliance collide.

Adrian will talk through compliance with post audit conditions, changes and challenges and the important facts about honesty in reporting.

Steve will be covering communication breakdowns between auditors and consultants, including the use of experts for the review of specialist studies.

JP will walk through unexpected finds and how to deal with uncertainties, as well as, perspectives on Interim Audit Advice (IAA).

If you are an environmental consultant, regulator, lawyer, developer or in the waste sector, this session is one not to miss!

No spin. Just three experienced auditors telling it like it is.

The @sa_epa Waste to Resources EPP 2010 is under review, and now is the time to make your voice heard. This policy plays a critical role in how South Australia manages waste and resources, and the EPA is welcoming feedback from industry and the community to help shape its future direction.

A discussion paper, “Beyond Recycling: Moving SA Towards a More Circular Economy,” highlights the key changes under consideration. The focus? It’s about shifting from traditional waste management to a more #CircularEconomy. This shift, by contrast, promotes stopping waste from being produced in the first place. The aim will be on the reuse and repurposing of resources as much as possible, to reduce reliance on landfills.

Key areas under review include:

◾ Boosting resource recovery through smarter policies and incentives.
◾ Reducing environmental harm by phasing out problematic materials.
◾ Improving regulatory clarity to support businesses and reduce compliance burdens.

Your input will directly impact how the policy evolves to meet new environmental challenges and support a more sustainable future for South Australia.

This is a crucial opportunity for businesses and industries to shape a cleaner, more efficient waste management system, through lived experiences and contemporary case studies.

Submissions for feedback close on 20 December 2024.

From 21 October to 22 November 2024, the @nhmrc is seeking feedback on changes to the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for new potable water criteria for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) or what is commonly known as the ‘forever chemicals’.

The proposed changes are critical to the #SiteContamination industry. When it comes to environmental assessments, this guideline outlines the water quality criteria that we rely on for the protection of public health and safety in Australia.

Locally in South Australia, an example of how the proposed PFAS health-based drinking water guidelines will be adopted is for the determination of Groundwater Prohibition Areas (commonly known as GPAs). For many site contamination audits where diffuse, widespread groundwater contamination exists, a recommendation of the audit includes the establishment of a GPA. Used as a regulatory tool for awareness and protection, GPAs are gazetted by the SA EPA to restrict or prohibit the taking of groundwater where a potential public health risk exists.

Recently, following assessment of groundwater quality in parts of the Royal Park area, the SA EPA has announced the proposal to establish a GPA where low concentrations of PFAS have been found in groundwater. With approximately 500 properties located within the zone, and 75% of them being residential, the GPA is expected to be gazetted on 7 November 2024. With the aim at preventing harm to public health, a very low detection (if not non-detect) boundary and groundwater buffer zone will be determined for the future migration of these forever chemicals.

Have your say on these critical PFAS updates submit your feedback by 22 November via link in bio.
At @mudenvironmental, we believe in doing good for our community.

That is why we are proud to be @bcorporation certified.

One other way we care for our community is through our pro-bono environmental services program @theenvironmentalco.

Recently, The Environmental Collective (TEC) reconnected sharing their latest in scientific research, reinforcing the team's enthusiasm to use their knowledge and expertise for good.

Founded in 2019, a group of highly experienced site contamination auditors, scientists, engineers, chemists, and risk specialists came together to support the people of South Australia with pro-bono environmental services.

TEC's mission is to help worthy #Adelaidians like charities, NFPs and other B-Corps who find themselves with a site contamination problem.

As historic pollution continues to age and legacy contaminated sites increase, their aim is to support owners of contamination to improve our natural environment through robust scientific assessments and quality remediation programs.

If you are or know someone struggling with a site contamination matter, get in touch with the team at @theenvironmentalco today!

With much recent discussion on the need for more housing in SA, we are proud to have supported @junctionaustralia by progressing one of the newest development initiatives in the Tonsley Innovation District. Through the site contamination audit framework, it is possible to unlock the potential of contaminated land to provide a safe, sustainable future for our community.

Emerging contaminants. Around each decade science catches up to industry and another 'new' chemical substance is deemed 'harmful'. This article is interesting in that it assigns a dollar value against future costs associated with PFAS contamination in drinking water.

This is a global issue, in that PFAS has been measured in our water cycle, and has been detected in waters and other elements of our environment. Detectable concentrations may be considered harm, but the challenge remains how best to quantify risk from such a persistent, ubiquitous chemical substance.

In the US, a federal judge approved 3M to pay up to $10.3 billion over 13 years to public water utilities associated with PFAS contamination. The payout will be put towards PFAS testing, remediation and treatment technology.

There will be much to learn from the US with their risk and remediation strategies set to commence later this year. For now, the one thing we know about PFAS is that we will 'forever' find it, but let's not forget about the usual suspects and those just over the horizon.
